A Technology Connections video on JVC's LCCS, a display hybrid that cycles a color LCD shutter over a monochrome CRT to produce field-sequential color without dots or stripes. It builds on his earlier videos about analog TV and compatible color.

HN links it as a neat breakdown of an unusual CRT/LCD color technology.

JVC built a working model with that approach. There's a neat breakdown of the tech on this YT channel: [VIDEO]

Tangential but Alec Watson of Technology Connections looked at a studio monitor that worked on the principle of cycling an LCD overlay over a monochrome CRT. When I was growing up in Toronto, I want to say that I remember seeing these in use by “LiveEye” crews of CityTV whenever I went by an on-location shoot. (1) [VIDEO]

The Sony Watchman[1] had the electron gun at the bottom shooting at a tilted screen instead of shooting at it from the back. This allowed to make a GameBoy-sized portable CRT TV. There is also an interesting LCD/CRT hybrid from JVC[2], it's not flat by itself, but the way it adds color to an otherwise black&white screen could be used in slim designs. [1] [LINK] [2] [VIDEO]

Modern video projectors also display color channels sequentially and also exhibit that effect. Also, this particular CRT technology was not only used in oscilloscopes: [VIDEO]
