The first part of Lindsay Ellis's video essay series on the troubled production and critical reception of The Hobbit film trilogy.
HN recommends it as an engaging analysis of how the Hobbit films were made, in threads on CGI and Tolkien.

Longer form than EFaP, but Lindsay Ellis has some great film/TV analysis videos. She's usually more focused on writing than anything else, though. Here's a postmortem she did on the Hobbit films, which was recently nominated for a Hugo award: [VIDEO] Other solid works by her include a postmortem on the last season of Game of Thrones and an analysis of themes in Michael Bay's Transformers. (I know that last one sounds weird, but it's really well done.)
The Hobbit films had a troubled production and were terribly rushed. Here's the first video in a small YouTube series on it: [VIDEO]
Agreed agreed. The problem with The Hobbit was not the visual effects. The problem was that it was made without a plan, under duress. Lindsay Ellis has a three-part video essay series ( [VIDEO] yes, I know it says 1/2, I promise there is a 2/3) exploring this.
