I think the Alpine Linux image for Docker is a good solution to the point about userland bloat. Much better than unikernels, which would entail giving up all the benefits of running containers on a shared, mature OS kernel, particularly with regard to performance, resource pooling, and debuggability. I'm still waiting for bcantrill, who actually has experience with large-scale production systems (unlike me), to expound on why he believes unikernels are a terrible idea, as he said in a brief rant here: [VIDEO]
Listen to this discussion[0] which highlights the point I am making. I set the marker for the relevant "container" comment but watch the entire thing to understand more fully what I and others are saying and why. [0] [VIDEO]
I also found the somewhat more casual BSDnow podcasts that featured Mr. Cantrill quite insightful[1,2,3]. He shows up around 15 or 30 minutes in. [1] [LINK] [2] [VIDEO] [3] [LINK]
