A seven-minute Google I/O 2014 talk by Simon Newton on how developers can make use of Google's global network. It describes the network's footprint and some of the services running on it.
HN commenters, including a Googler, cite it as the public explanation of how Google serves traffic, including DNS-based load balancing.

As others have mentioned this seems entirely expected based on how Google uses DNS for load balancing and serving your query from a datacenter as close to you as possible. If you want to see some details of how it works have a look at [VIDEO] . Disclaimer: I work for Google. I speak for myself etc. blah.
Disclaimer: not representing anybody, my opinion not anybody else's. I work at Google, and my team looks after this. Here: [VIDEO] I can't tell you anything that's not in that video.
I've only ever found two things publicly available on this. The patent related to DNS GSLB [LINK] and the video by Simon Newton which describes the global footprint and some of the services [VIDEO] . Most of what I know about GSLB is from my time working at Google.
