A classic Clarke and Dawe sketch from 1991 in which an Australian senator evasively discusses an oil spill, famously saying the front fell off.
Used almost entirely as a joke reference when HN threads involve accidents, failures or evasive official statements.

Oh well that's not very typical, I'd like to make that point... (reference: [VIDEO] ) Seriously, these findings are facepalm-worthy. It really doesn't inspire any confidence in their quality control.
Well, it's not built of cardboard and rubber... Does everyone know this delicious skit? "Clarke and Dawe - The Front Fell Off" [VIDEO]
I really thought your comment was going to be a reference to this sketch. “The front fell off” is...not something one expects to be a realistic scenario. [VIDEO]
I have run into this a few times when I've posted a link (where it seemed amusing and relevant to a discussion) to this classic video of Australian Senator Bob Collins discussing an environmental mishap: [VIDEO] Invariably, someone replies with a comment like "People should be aware that this is not actually an Australian senator, it is the comedian John Clarke impersonating one." Every. Single. Time. As if it wouldn't be obvious after watching the first few minutes of the video! What ever happened to the fun of not realizing something is satire until you're partway into it?
What about parody that a reasonable person would recognise as such, but a small number of fools might not? For example [1] or [2] [1] [VIDEO] [2] [LINK]
[VIDEO] [Interviewer:] So what do you do to protect the environment in cases like this? [Senator Collins:] Well, the ship was towed outside the environment. [Interviewer:] Into another environment…. [Senator Collins:] No, no, no. it’s been towed beyond the environment, it’s not in the environment [Interviewer:] Yeah, but from one environment to another environment. [Senator Collins:] No, it’s beyond the environment, it’s not in an environment. It has been towed beyond the environment. [Interviewer:] Well, what’s out there? [Senator Collins:] Nothing’s out there… [Interviewer:] Well there must be something out there [Senator Collins:] There is nothing out there… all there is …. is sea …and birds ….and fish [Interviewer:] And? [Senator Collins:] And 20,000 tons of crude oil [Interviewer:] And what else? [Senator Collins:] And a fire [Interviewer:] And anything else? [Senator Collins:] And the part of the ship that the front fell off, but there’s nothing else out there.
Someone should remake "The front fell off" video[1] but fitting the context: A Russian reporter interviewing the Russian defense minister. [1] [VIDEO]
It's the part of 12 factor that makes me giggle a bit; like it how does it get into the environment? Reminds of the "Front fell off" comic sketch. "No, we towed it out of the environment" [VIDEO]
- Umm they got to have a steering wheel, there's a minimum crew requirement. - What's the minimum crew? - Oh, one I suppose. It does sort of feel like "The front fell off". [VIDEO]
[VIDEO] [Interviewer:] Well, if this wasn’t safe, why did it have 80,000 tonnes of oil on it? [Senator Collins:] Well, I’m not saying it wasn’t safe, it’s just perhaps not quite as safe as some of the other ones. [Interviewer:] Why? [Senator Collins:] Well, some of them are built so the front doesn’t fall off at all. [Interviewer:] Wasn’t this built so the front wouldn’t fall off? [Senator Collins:] Well, obviously not. [Interviewer:] “How do you know?” [Senator Collins:] Well, ‘cause the front fell off, and 20,000 tons of crude oil spilled into the sea, caught fire. It’s a bit of a give-away.” I would just like to make the point that that is not normal. [Interviewer:] Well, what sort of standards are these oil tankers built to? [Senator Collins:] Oh, very rigorous … maritime engineering standards. [Interviewer:] What sort of things? [Senator Collins:] Well the front’s not supposed to fall off, for a start.
no, you see, they took the nuclear waste out of the environment. no, not into another environment, beyond the environment. [VIDEO]
Yeah, not sure this one is even going to uphold the minimum crew requirements. For non-Australian readers: [VIDEO]
Obligatory: [VIDEO] Otherwise I hope this isn't totally accurate. Not because i like musk/tesla, but because it'll be just another case where i'm galled by the fact they were even allowed on the road in this state, and the complete lack of safety standards and consequences.
> Would have to guess that there was a defect in this one though... "The Front Fell Off" [VIDEO]
Well, a wave hit it. A wave hit it? A wave hit the ship. Is that unusual? Oh yeah, at sea? Chance in a million! [VIDEO]
Various things related to it are common "enough" that you can find discussion around them - for example the Airbus sideways landing gear: [LINK] Of course, these are "normal problems" that shouldn't happen and need to be investigated, but it's not quite "the front fell off": [VIDEO]
I'm with you on this one. consider this conversation actually happened, this video is just a recreation of it. Clarke and Dawe - The Front Fell Off [VIDEO] Not all of them are so extreme but the idea is the same.
My best guess is they're lying, or they model curbs to have a "low damage score" so its okay if the ai thinks theres a 10% chance a path will hit a curb. I'm excited for self driving cars, but I have reservations about a system that has to hard code "don't hit a telephone pole". It reminds me of this skit [VIDEO]
I stopped using Lyft after two close calls with drivers who must have faked their papers. One Lyft drive ran a red light into a postal truck at an otherwise empty intersection causing the front to fall off, like that Australian ship: [VIDEO]
I'm starting to suspect I might be cynical. I was pretty impressed at the "1,000,000 cigarette butts that I removed from the environment" but I couldn't help but think "moved into what?" which brought this ( [VIDEO] ) to mind: [Interviewer:] Into another environment…. [Senator Collins:] Nothing’s out there… Also, I couldn't help but wonder if he was removing trash at a faster rate than it was being added. Picking up litter is a good thing certainly, but we really need to get people to stop creating it in the first place. Even properly disposed of all that trash is a massive problem, but I'd love to see more effort getting people to clean up after themselves. A very long time ago I'd see PSAs with owls imploring us to "Give a hoot" and fake indians crying. Was that helpful? Does that kind of thing even exist today? Now that nobody watches TV are they pushed at kids on tiktok?
